Our Mission
AMASE Northwestern Chapter’s mission is to enrich the lives of students with disabilities through weekly music and art lessons and also promote greater awareness about neurodiversity and language inclusivity.
Our Programs
Saturday Lesson and Ensemble
Every Saturday morning, AMASE volunteers teach private music lessons for piano, violin, percussion, guitar, harp (and more)! When not in their lesson, students participate in arts and crafts, learn music theory and composition, and participate in a group ensemble where they learn a song with choreography. We work hard to engage students with various learning disabilities across different age groups. Our executive board consults volunteers to create individualized plans for each student to fit his or her needs.

Community Choir
Founded in Winter 2017 by Keishel Lee, a previous Co-Operations Director of AMASE Northwestern, the Community Music Chorus meets on Tuesday afternoons on Northwestern campus. Through our partnership with other non-profit organizations in Evanston, such as Our Place and Transition House, AMASE provides another opportunity for more students with disabilities to make music and socialize. Volunteers and students come together to sing in a group, led by music education graduate students at Northwestern University Bienen School of Music.

Quarterly Student Recital
Programming for every quarterly session is based on a theme, and at the end academic quarter, AMASE puts together a recital. This is a great chance for our students in both Saturday Ensemble and Community Music Chorus to gain performance experience, as well as showcase their handwork and talents. We thrive to provide a safe performance space for our students and encourage them to express their music and art to others.

Spring Sensory-Friendly Carnival
In April, in honor of Autism Awareness month, AMASE puts together a sensory-friendly carnival for our students and their families. We often partner up with other student organizations at Northwestern to invite other members in the local special needs community to participate in our carnival. Our volunteers work the stations to provide an opportunity for our community to socialize outside of a musical setting. With tons of food, games, and exciting prizes, our Spring Carnival never fails to bring so much joy and laughter to everyone.

Besides providing above programs for our students and their families, AMASE volunteers are also dedicated to promote awareness and acceptance of neurodiversity to the greater campus community through various campaigns, fundraisers, and collaborations with other student organizations with similar interests.
